The Income Tax Department launched New e-Filing Portal for Income Tax Returns

INTRODUCTION

A new taxpayer-friendly e-filing site of the Income Tax Department will be inaugurated today, i.e. June 7. According to the Finance Ministry on Saturday, the new features of the portal include interactive software that aids in the filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and a call center for taxpayer support. "On June 1, the Income Tax Department will unveil www.incometax.gov.in, a new e-filing platform."

FEATURES:

•    To provide fast refunds to taxpayers, a new taxpayer-friendly portal has been integrated with the immediate processing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs).

•    All interactions, uploads, and pending actions will be shown on a single dashboard for taxpayers to review and take necessary measures.

•    Taxpayers will be able to update their profiles in advance to submit information about their income, such as their salary, home property, and business/profession, which will be used to pre-fill their ITR. After TDS and SFT statements are submitted, a detailed capability of pre-filling with salary income, interest, dividends, and capital gains will be available (due date is June 30th, 2021).

•    To begin, free ITR preparation software with interactive questions is offered to assist taxpayers with ITRs 1, 4 (online and offline) and ITR 2 (offline). The method of preparing ITRs 3, 5, 6, and 7 will be available soon.

•    A new call center for taxpayer support has been established to provide prompt responses to taxpayer inquiries.

•     Functionalities for filling Income Tax Forms, including detailed FAQs, User Manuals, Videos, and a chatbox/live agent, were also available. It would be possible to add tax professionals, submit responses to Notices under Faceless Scrutiny, or appeals.

BENEFITS OF NEW INCOME TAX E-FILING PORTAL

•    The new user-friendly portal will be integrated with the immediate processing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) in addition to providing taxpayers with prompt refunds.

•    Free offline and online ITR preparation software with interactive questions to assist taxpayers in filing ITRs even if they have no prior tax knowledge, including pre-filling for minimal data entering work.

•    All important desktop portal functionalities will be available on the mobile app, which will then be enabled for full mobile network access.

•    All conversations, uploads, and pending actions will be shown on a single dashboard for the taxpayer to review and act on.

•    Following that, a new online tax payment system will be introduced on the new portal, with several new payment choices including net banking, UPI, RTGS, NEFT, and other modalities.

Individual income tax filers now have until September 30 to file their taxes for the fiscal year 2020-21, rather than July 31, 2021, as was previously the deadline.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic-related delays, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Thursday extended several income tax return deadlines for the financial year 2020-21the  (assessment year 2021-22). According to the CBDT circular, this was done to provide tax relief to taxpayers during the pandemic.
